A Death Penalty Red Herring - Part 1 & Part 2

The Holy Grail of death penalty opponents is to prove actual execution of an innocent person. But those who demand perfection for murder convicts make no similar demand to protect the law-abiding public. Part 1 of 2. (Read)

A Lesson For The Media, Not Obama

What if Bush had done it?

Perhaps the American media has begun to awaken from their self-imposed trance over the election of Barack Obama.  Politico’s Josh Gerstein figures that moment cannot come too soon, although he also notes that they have a great deal of self-interest in staying asleep.  He asks whether a series of actions by George Bush would have received the collective yawn they got from the media when Obama took them, or a feeding frenzy by journalists instead

Some of these we can answer.  When the Bush administration — specifically VP [Richard] Cheney — met with energy producers in confidential advisory groups to promulgate their energy policy, both the media and the Democrats went ballistic.  In fact, the latter sued to get the names of the attendees made public despite the fact that the administration is ultimately responsible for their policies.

Some of them require more speculation.  For instance, George Bush never tried freezing out a network or publicly labeling it as an illegitimate news organization.  Had he done so, perhaps with MS-NBC, the rest of the media industry would have risen in righteous indignation to demand an end to it.  In the present case, the broadcast nets did finally push back against the White House, but only in one specific instance, and for the most part have focused on whether Obama and his team are right about their assessment of Fox than in the chilling impact of having a President demand that other journalists ignore Fox.

Had Bush snubbed the Dalai Lama, the media would have ripped him for deprioritizing human rights and ignoring a man of peace.  That would have been an overreaction; the media probably got it more right than not with Obama’s postponement of their meeting, but it’s doubtful they would have given Bush that benefit of the doubt.

In other words, the press has a story line that they have to defend.  If Obama gets exposed as a flop, and worse as a typical Chicago pol, then it makes their failure to properly vet Obama during the primaries that much more clear.  In a sense, they created Obama, and his collapse would be their collapse as well.

South Carolina: A Central Front In Battle For GOP Soul

Shocker: DeMint, Graham disagree on GOP direction

The national debate among Republicans over their party's future is nowhere sharper than in South Carolina, where Sens. Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint pursue distinctly different visions for restoring GOP primacy at the polls.

On the Swine Flu Outbreak

. . . from CBS News, story by Sharyl Attkisson: "'Swine Flu Cases Overestimated?' CBS News Exclusive: Study Of State Results Finds H1N1 Not As Prevalent As Feared. If you've been diagnosed 'probable' or 'presumed' 2009 H1N1 or 'swine flu' in recent months, you may be surprised to know this: odds are you didn’t have H1N1 flu.  In fact, you probably didn’t have flu at all. That's according to state-by-state test results obtained in a three-month-long CBS News investigation.  The ramifications of this finding are important. According to the Center for Disease Control, CDC, and Britain's National Health Service, once you have H1N1 flu, you're immune from future outbreaks of the same virus. Those who think they've had H1N1 flu -- but haven't -- might mistakenly presume they're immune. As a result, they might skip taking a vaccine that could help them, and expose themselves to others with H1N1 flu under the mistaken belief they won't catch it. Parents might not keep sick children home from school, mistakenly believing they've already had H1N1 flu. Why the uncertainty about who has and who hasn't had H1N1 flu?" Because the governments in charge of tabulating all these kinds of statistics.  Swine flu cases overestimated -- why would that be?

Why would swine flu cases be overestimated?  There are no coincidences in politics.  "But, Rush, but, Rush, this is a disease, what do you mean, politics?"  It's political!  The whole thing is political.  It's being used as a tool to persuade people to support Obama's health care reform initiative.  It is a tool whereby government officials get to tell citizens what they must do.  And now we find out that they've overestimated the number of swine flu cases out there and that's on the heels of a story, "Oh, my God the vaccine, we don't have enough vaccine, oh, we're all going to die! Waaaah! What are we going to do?  Qhat are we going to do?"  It's incredible to watch this.

Yeah, Maybe

U.S. intel wonders: Hey, maybe it’s time to revisit that NIE on Iran

The CYA element here is that they’re supposedly not revisiting the key finding — disputed by all of our relevant allies since practically the day the report appeared
— that Iran suspended its weapons program from 2003 to 2007. Instead, they’re inevitably going to conclude that the program was restarted in 2007. Which, frankly, might be for the best: After the Iraq WMD debacle, a well meaning lie to convince the public that our intel on Iran wasn’t also completely FUBARed and politicized would go a long way.

Ponder the idea of our country’s intel assessments being treated as though they’re concealing enemy activity; as the Journal reminds us, U.S. analysts have actually been more willing to give Iran the benefit of the doubt than the UN has. Now, the question: Was this leaked to the Journal at the White House’s behest or against the White House’s wishes? Rumors of an impending U.S. finding that their weapons program is back in business does give The One some extra leverage over Iran internationally (although the report itself wouldn’t be ready anytime soon), but it could also be the Bush dynamic in reverse — i.e. hawkish intelligence officers trying to force Obama to be more aggressive by feeding this to the media for public consumption. If it’s the latter, I hope the administration cracks down hard: It’s tough enough to make foreign-policy decisions when your generals are giving speeches about what troop levels are needed, but this nonsense with intel people trying to force the president’s hand by applying public pressure has to stop. Who’s working for whom here?

And of course, it cuts both ways. Check out this unbelievably conveniently timed bombshell about how there may be impurities in Iran’s enriched uranium that render it unfit for bombmaking, which would explain why they might be amenable to letting Russia enrich it for them. The talking-point takeaway, per David Ignatius: “Here’s the bottom line: There may be more time on the Iranian nuclear clock than some analysts had feared.” How simply wonderful for doves. Why hasn’t anyone said anything about this before?

Media Tells the Democrats to Go on the Attack to Win in Virginia and New Jersey
Democrats are in big trouble, so their pals are advising them to attack Republicans -- as if they're not constantly doing that! But wait! I thought partisanship offended the precious moderates.

"Rev. Sharpton wants to meet with the NFL commissioner to oppose my buying the Rams.   This saddens and disappoints me. I know Sharpton. He's better than this. You know, I believe in freedom and second chances. I don't discriminate. I didn't judge his fitness to be in radio when he wanted to earn an honest living for once, given his role in the Tawana Brawley hoax." -Rush

Just Wondering

If the Taliban’s serious about detente, why don’t they give us Bin Laden?

Or rather, if Obama’s serious about detente, why doesn’t he demand that they do so as one of those “constructive beginnings” with Islamist fascists that he’s been pursuing? I’ve been thinking about that since reading the Times’s profile of Mullah Omar this morning and haven’t come up with a good answer yet.
